All You Should Know About Chocolate In India!

 Whenever we think about the sweet item or we eagerly want to eat it then “Chocolate” is the first thing that comes to our mind. Especially the youth of india has more craze for chocolates. I think without chocolate our life would never be happy. Chocolate is happiness. See, when you give chocolate to anybody they never say no to it. Especially, kids, their faces are filled with full of happiness and joy. Therefore without chocolate, every happy moment is not that happy. All of us eat chocolate regularly at least once a week. But how much we know about chocolate. Because of this reason I am writing this blog post for all of us. So, let’s see what information we get about chocolate In India.   

History of Cacao in India.

 According to evidence found by anthropologists, the ancient Mesoamerican in early 1900 B. C. first cultivated cacao plants found in the central American rainforest. Then they fermented, roasted, and ground the beans of cacao and made its paste that they mixed with water and other ingredients to brew frothy chocolate drinks. From “Cacao beans” chocolate is made. I couldn’t find exactly when cacao came to India but read somewhere that British Company brought cacao in Southern India in the early 18th century.

“Cadbury, the world-famous chocolate company, gave the cacao seed for the first time in the year 1960-70 to Indian farmers in Kerala. Wayanad, a small city in Kerala state in 1965 first began to cultivate the cacao. Slowly the farmer of the neighbouring state also starts growing cacao. Right now Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, and Karnataka mainly cultivate cacao.

Many Indian and foreign brands produce chocolate. Out of all of the information about the top 5 brands, I am sharing here.

1. Cadbury

John Cadbury was the founder of Cadbury. It was established in Birmingham, England, in 1824. In 1948, Cadbury came to India. It started cacao cultivation in Kerala. Because of Cadbury, the chocolate industry came to India. So, we should thank Cadbury for that. “ Cadbury Dairy Milk” is the benchmark for other chocolates in India. Moreover 5 star, Perk, Bournville, Tang, Oreo, etc. are some products of Cadbury.

2. Nestle

Nestle was founded by Henri Nestle, in Switzerland, in 1866. It is the largest food company in the world. In 1961 Nestle came to India. Nestle produces only two chocolate bars ‘Kitkat’ and ‘Munch’. However out of these two Kitkat is the favourite chocolate of all people. When you eat Kitkat its aroma spread everywhere in the mouth.

3. Amul (Anand Milk Federation Union Limited)

It’s an Indian Company based in Anand, in Gujarat state. On 14 December 1946 Verghese Kurien and Tribhuvandas Kishibhai Patel founded this company. It is India’s biggest dairy company. Amul started chocolate production in 1973. Amul offers Dark chocolate in different flavours such as fruit and nuts, Milk chocolate, Mocha, Orange, Bitter, etc. and all of us already know that “ Amul is the taste of India”.

4. Ferrero Rocher

It’s an Italian company founded by Michele Ferrero, in 1946. In 2004 it came in India and within 9 years he created a premium chocolate market in India. Furthermore it provides  Ferror Rocher praline chocolate, Kinder Joy, etc. Without a doubt, Kinder Joy is most popular with kids. The speciality of this chocolate is it has choco balls along with small toys inside its oval package.

5. Hershey

It was founded by Milton.S.Hershey in 1894, in the United States. In 2016, it came to India. Hershey Syrup, Hershey’s milk boosters, Hershey’s cocoa powder, etc. are products of Hershey. Moreover, it has almost  80 branches all around the world which provides rich quality chocolate all around the world.

1. Bovetti

In 1994 Valter Bovetti started the first factory of Bovetti chocolates. The main attraction of this chocolate is, the small candies are made in shapes of nuts and tools. Besides this crystallized rose petals and cocoa butter is used to make chocolate candies. It’s the chocolate that instantly spread instant sweetness in our mouth.

2. Kallari

Heirloom cacao is the best bean worldwide used to make quality chocolate. Kallari chocolate uses these beans to make world-class chocolate having less sugar, minimum refining time as compared to others, and shorter roasting time. Meanwhile, it provides different types of chocolate bars having different percentages of cacao in each like 80%, 75%, and 71% cacao.

3. Vosges

It was owned by Katrina Markoff in 1998. Miss. Markoff travels the world and then makes this chocolate with experiments in the recipe. The speciality of this chocolate is that it contains varieties of flavours that contain spices, bacon, and other ingredients. Moreover, Red fire chocolate, Black Pearl Chocolate,  Mo’s Milk chocolate Bacon Bar, etc. are some products of Vosges.

4. Amedei

It is an artisan chocolate manufacturing company located in Italy. They use single origin and single varietal cocoa beans in the production of chocolate bars. The most expensive chocolate bars made by Amedei is Amedei Porcelana. It contains almost 70% dark chocolate. In addition to this, it has refined non-acidic and nutty flavour with Caramel in it.

5. Pacari

In 2002 Santiago Peralta and Carla Barboto started this company in Ecuador. It is a bean to bar manufacturer. Meanwhile the chocolate bar contains 70% cacao along with organic sugar, cocoa butter, sunflower lecithin. Nuts, peanuts, and dried fruit are also added in the bar.

Do Indian people like chocolate?

 India is the world’s fastest-growing market of chocolate. Meanwhile in the year 2019, India has INR 172 billion chocolate market. Besides this, according to reports, chocolate sales have increased by 24.3%  in India. The main reason behind the increase in sales is the young generation of the nation. Reports show that the young generation prefers chocolate more as a sweet item rather than other sweet products. Also, 44% of Indian consumers think that it is healthy to eat sugary snacks like chocolate and cakes. So, as per the sales report, Indian people like chocolate and its graph is increasing day by day.

Some Facts about chocolate!

  •  “Cacao” is how we say “Cocoa” in Spanish.
  • Cacao tree takes approximately 4 to 5 years to produce its first fruit.
  • For a balanced, heart-healthy diet and lifestyle chocolate is best to eat.
  • The Cacao tree produces approximately 2,500 beans.
  • Almost 40 to 50 million people depend on cacao for their livelihood. 
  • It takes 2 to 4 days to make a single-serving chocolate bar.
